Sherrill Williamson first became a client of mine when she was searching for a local Cle Elum photographer to capture a first birthday session for her sweet granddaughter, Norah. Over the last three years it has become Sherrill and Norah’s tradition to visit with me several times each year for special portrait sessions. Every year on of my favorite sessions is Norah’s Halloween costume!  Not only has it been so fun to watch Norah grow through the years, but I also love seeing the magic these two create together for her photos. This fall, I thought it would be fun to share with all of you a peek at their sessions over the last three holidays. This year, she dressed up as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

How perfect are Norah’s little red shoes? Of course, you can’t be Dorothy without your little dog too. So Sherrill brought along Norah’s new little puppy, Hank. Though, I have a feeling he won’t be little for too much longer!

 

Fun Fact: Did you know Dorothy’s ruby red slippers were originally silver?

In L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz books, which are the original Oz stories, Dorothy’s slippers are silver in color. They turned red—and became the most iconic shoes of the century in the 1939 film.

Last year, Norah came to me as the cutest little witch I’ve ever seen. I don’t know what I loved more, that epic hat or her straw broom. It was only fitting for that session that we choose to use edit with a bit of a whimsical magic feel.

This brings me to Norah’s very first Halloween session with me and her adorable Little Red Riding Hood outfit. There was no big, bad wolf in these photos though. Just her trusty guard dog and a basket full of flowers for her grandma. I adore Sherrill’s desire to not only document her family but to create tangible works of art out of those experiences. These sessions are not just photographic keepsakes. Sherrill is building a visual history of her granddaughter as we create a new heirloom album each year. I know that one day when Norah is older, she is going to love looking back at these memories with Sherrill.
