Meet Your Photographer: Mary Maletzke

Photographers all begin their journeys in different ways, for different reasons.  I think my passion for photography, in part, came from losing my parents early in life. I doubt that when my mother passed away she realized that my most prized possession would become a collection of family photographs dating back to the mid-1800s.  Every time I see these photographs I’m aware that I’m viewing a piece of history, a part of my legacy.  These portraits are a tangible connection with my past, and they inspire me to document the future.  My path to becoming a photographer in Cle Elum was wide and winding, and my calling came from my family history combined with becoming a step mom to two amazing kids.

Having a family of my own intensified my calling to capture and document our time on earth.  When I look at our family portraits on the wall of our home, it is a daily visual reminder of who we are as a family, and the love that we hold for one another.  I have realized that as parents we can obsessively photograph each moment of our children’s life, but we often don’t realize the need to step into the portraits ourselves.  If life plays out in the way that we hope, we will leave this earth before our children – and when we do, those photographs of us will serve as the catalyst for stories that they will pass down to future generations.

This is why every step of your experience with me centers around the creation of heirloom portraits to be passed down from generation to generation.  As a photographer, I can’t help but be an advocate for printed portraits in an age where so much of our life centers around intangible photographs, stored on media that will no longer exist in this lifetime.  Each of the heirloom products I offer is designed and built to withstand the test of time.Decades from now your great, great grandchildren will be able to see the same portraits that hang in your home today.

Choosing the right heirlooms begins with a design consultation.  In this first meeting, we will discuss which locations around Cle Elum and surrounding areas will best suit your style.  Choosing a photography location is more than choosing a beautiful space.  It’s about selecting a location that reflects your family and fits into the style of your home.  After all, your photos will end up proudly displayed there.  Once we’ve mapped our location we’ll also discuss the different mediums we can preserve your family photos on – from heirloom canvases and metals, to framed prints and albums, there is no shortage of options to display your family’s legacy.  I look forward to meeting you and working together to create the perfect images for you.
